Going back to the future
by Adrian Beard

Last Wednesday I went to Foodex only to find that it was such a big event that I had to go back the following day to do it justice. It is always interesting to go to food and wine exhibition because, in a way, you are looking into the future of what people will be eating and drinking. For example, I first sampled an excellent Cabernet Sauvignon from Bodegas Weinert at Vinexpo last summer, but now I can buy it five minutes away from where I live in Tokyo.

Tomasello Winery produces conventional wines as well and this may be why the fruit wines were so good - they know the high standards that wine drinker expect. It will be interesting to see where this new style of quality fruit is going.

If you want to look into the future yourself, you can buy the Blueberry and Raspberry offerings for around 2,400 yen at Isetan. The other fruit wines will follow soon as, I'm sure, will the competition; the revelations about the health benefits of red wine helping kick-start the wine boom here.

Now it is blueberries that are getting all the press. Indeed in the same USA pavilion I sampled a tasty refreshing (and healthy?) blueberry beer from BluBeer.

There were a lot of new wines to be distributed and I shall be on the lookout for them in the future.
