News Section Would
you drink a Blueberry Brewski?
Hey,
some people didn't think Cherry Coke would work either.
A
Wisconsin-based start-up will be introducing a blueberry beer to
the Madison area later this summer.
HMS
WorldSupply Company is already selling BluBeer in Japan, where
it is expecting to sell around $200,000 worth this year.
Officials
say Japan was chosen as the first test market because of the
popularity of the blueberry, which is prized there for both its
taste and health benefits.
HMS
introduced samples of the beer to supermarket executives
attending a convention in Chicago this week.
"It's
a light refreshing crisp amber ale with a very slight blueberry
taste and aroma" HMS Co-owner Thomas Moffitt said.
Moffitt
said he hopes the company's attendance at the convention will
attract more U.S. retailers.
For
now BluBeer is micro-brewed in California and stored in a
Madison warehouse, but that will soon change.
"We're
actually planning to start brewing it within the next few weeks
with Pioneering brewing company in Black River Falls,
Wisconsin," Moffitt said.
BluBeer
is expected to hit bars and store shelves in Milwaukee by
summer's end. A pint of the blue brew is expect to sell for
$3.50.
Online
survey shows about 60% of respondents would like to drink the
beer.
